In 1999, Brayan Peña was a “chubby 16-year-old catcher from Havana who was a pretty decent ballplayer,” as he called himself. He was playing for the Cuban National Baseball Team with a dream to one day make it to the Major Leagues. In the same year, Peña defected from Cuba. Given only 24 hours to make the choice, Peña jumped out of a bathroom window, ran into an awaiting vehicle, and left everything behind in pursuit of his dream to play Major League Baseball in the United States. As scary and heart-wrenching as it was to leave family and friends behind, Peña refers to that escape as his window of opportunity — it led to a 12-year-long career in major league baseball. Peña broke into the big leagues in 2005 as a member of the Atlanta Braves before joining the Kansas City Royals for four seasons before his Tigers arrival. Today, Brayan joins a long line of former Tigers as the West Michigan Whitecaps Team Manager.
