Adjunct Faculty - Applied Clarinet Instructor

Grand Rapids Community College Music Department is seeking candidates to teach Applied Clarinet Lessons in the fall and winter semesters at our Grand Rapids campus. Applied music faculty work directly with the Music Program Director on scheduling applied lessons. This position will allow the music department to meet the applied clarinet lesson needs of those students who are interested in studying applied clarinet as music majors or for personal interest.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
•
Teach private applied clarinet lessons to music majors and general college students.
•
Maintain accurate course records and submit related reports as requested.
•
Effectively assess student performance.
•
Create a safe and inclusive learning environment for students.
•
Incorporate new technologies and methods that enhance teaching and learning into their instructional methods.
•
Support the Department and College through other work normally expected of adjunct faculty members.
•
Respond to communications promptly and ensure student access to course information.
•
Perform tasks normally expected of adjunct faculty members.
•
Comply with GRCC policies and the Faculty Association Contract
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education Credentials
•
A Master's Degree in Music with a clarinet emphasis is required. Applicants without an earned Master's, who demonstrate a significant amount of professional experience as a performer and pedagogue along with significant college level teaching experience, may be considered.
Work Experience
•
Successful applied clarinet teaching experience is required.
•
Successful teaching experience at a Community College preferred but not required.
•
Experience working with adults from diverse backgrounds and with varying academic skills.
•
Participation in professional development and/or continuous improvement activities in order to remain current in the field.
Skills
•
Excellent pedagogical clarinet skills
•
Excellent clarinet performance skills
•
Functional piano skills
•
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
•
Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving abilities.
•
Ability to perform routine and unexpected duties with minimum supervision.
Physical Demands
•
Sit or stand for at least one hour at a time during applied lessons for technique demonstrations.
Mental Demands
•
An understanding of and appreciation for the community college philosophy and student population.
•
An interest in working with diverse student populations, who represent a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin and ability.
•
Interest in and willingness to work with changing instructional technologies used in and out of the classroom.
•
Willingness and availability to work a flexible schedule.
•
High energy level with enthusiasm and interest in helping and supporting students, staff, and the general public.
•
Ability to work under pressure while possessing mature judgment and flexibility in regards to interruptions and schedule changes.
•
Must use good judgment in handling sensitive or difficult situations in a pleasant and professional manner
