Nature of Work

This is semiskilled and lead work over a crew engaged in streets maintenance work. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level supervisor, superintendent, or administrator. The work includes planning, organizing, coordinating and assigning the work of a crew of equipment operators and maintenance assistants.  May fill in in the absence of the supervisor, as needed. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
  • Plans, organizes, schedules, assigns and coordinates the work of subordinate equipment operators and maintenance assistants; provides training and counseling, as needed.
  • Assures that proper safety standards and precautions are followed.
  • Oversees and participates in street, sidewalk replacement and repair; operated equipment as needed.
  • Assures adequate supplies, materials and equipment are available to crew; orders supplies and materials as needed.
  • Prepares and maintains records for weekly and monthly reports; prepares reports; prepares time records for payroll purposes.
  • Inspects completed work; assures that work is completed properly.
  • Ensures that equipment is in proper working order; oversees preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • May be assigned to 3rd shift, as needed.  
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Training and Experience
  • Graduation from high school.
--AND--
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the operation of medium and heavy equipment and some lead experience.
--OR--
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Driver's License.
Other Necessary Qualifications
Knowledge of:
  • Medium and heavy motorized equipment operation.
  • Routine equipment maintenance.
  • Safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of motorized equipment and hand and power tools.
Ability to:
  • Plan, organize, schedule, assign and coordinate the work of subordinate employees.
  • Train and counsel subordinate employees.
  • Operate medium and heavy motorized equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Use hand and power tools in a safe and effective manner.
  • Keep records and prepare reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, vendors and the general public.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
