TITLE OF POSITION: Science Laboratory Technician - Part Time 28hr/week

REPORTS TO: ADC / Science Lab Coordinator
PAY: $25,000
Summary:
This position will assist the Science Lab Coordinator and Science faculty in organizing, stocking, and inventorying of supplies and equipment in the Science Labs and assisting in various lab administration duties. The science lab technician will be responsible for helping to maintain inventory of chemicals, and specialized equipment. These responsibilities are performed in an ethical manner consistent with the University's mission, vision, and values which include diversity, equity and inclusion.
Responsibilities:
• Create/Maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for continuous and smooth lab operations
• Keep an up to date log/record for orders relating to any of the science courses.
• Ensure that experiments are set up on time and according to SOPs.
• Coordinate the use of laboratory equipment shared amongst labs as needed.
• Aid in faculty lab instruction by helping students to execute labs, and ensure equipment is used properly, safely, and in accordance to the instructions of the manufacturer as needed.
• Keep labs in an orderly fashion as indicated by Lab Coordinator and standards.
• Aid in Lab compliance with OSHA/MIOSHA by minimizing the risk of incidents and including but not limited to, spills, exposures, the maintaining of SDS files as directed by lab coordinator.
• Assist in handling of biohazardous materials and its disposal.
• Assist with lab inventory of models and equipment as assigned.
• Responsible for creating, maintaining and updating files and record keeping systems.
• Generate reports, memorandums, correspondence, presentation materials, spreadsheets and graphics, and other materials using various software programs as assigned.
• Handling of documents and maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
• Conducts special projects, research and assignments as needed.
• Aid in the training of student lab assistants.
• Demonstrate and promote the University Cultural Values.
• Understand and abide by all external and internal regulations and policies. This includes NCAA, GLIAC and national affiliations associated within athletics or other role specific regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in biochemistry, chemistry, or a closely related field of study is required. Master's degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry or a closely related field preferred.
• At least 1 year of experience in a college lab or work setting is required. Two years of college lab experience preferably in a chemistry setting is preferred.
• Experience with normal laboratory equipment but also chemistry specialized equipment such as HNMR and FTIR. Experience or the capacity to complete minor repairs of instruments is a plus!
• Training or certification in OSHA/MIOSHA regulations and in the use, handling, storage and disposal of chemicals which maybe hazardous. This can be acquired within 6 months of hire.
• Able to read and understand how labs are to be setup.
• Demonstrated capacity to analyze lab experiments, create processes or SOPs and execute experiments with consistent results.
• Capacity to deal with and follow through on responsibilities in a timely manner.
• Demonstrated ability to work accurately and effectively with computerized data systems (PC and mainframe).
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation and positive reactions to change and conflict resolution.
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, both written and oral which transcend diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and relate well to students, parents, faculty, staff, and others while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
• Demonstrated motivational and problem-solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of the University.
• Clear capacity to deal with confidential information.
• Ability to handle and trouble shoot complex processes and problems.
• Capacity to work effectively within irregular work hours and /or very busy or handle multiple tasks in a short period of time.
• Business office and laboratory environment. Exposure to known chemicals and microbial agents. Prolonged sitting and standing.
• Use of computer and telephone (eye and hand strain). No regular lifting requirements, occasional lifting up to 35 pounds.
• Must be able to safely move chemicals and equipment as needed between designated lab areas.
• Must be able to clean up spills where they occur according to OSHA/MIOSHA regulations.
• Must be able to discern specialized symbols and determine colors or identify odors.
